1. What is Popular Culture and what does it mean to you?
Popular Culture's definition based on the reading in the text "Common Culture" is simply defined as "shared knowledge and practices of a specific group at a specific time". In summarization of this point pop culture can be changeable and also initiate change as well. What pop culture means to me is simple. In looking at the word popular, this to me means something special or known maybe even famous. Culture to me means a set of values or beliefs that relate to a specific group or people.
2. Why is an understanding of popular culture relevant to you in a business environment and in your present and future career?
The understanding of popular culture will be relevant to me in my career because it will allow me to focus skills and strength in being able to relate to people in general. I plan on being able to one day become a manager or director in my field of business which is banking. Understanding how popular culture has become immense in shaping our society will help me relate to my customers. In the home lending business it is important to know commonalities in geographic areas to be able to market and target different segments when trying to find the best product or loan for customers wishing to buy homes.
3. What would you consider to be an example of a pop culture artifact? And why would you choose it?
I would consider Charlie and The Chocolate Factory a popular culture artifact. I have chosen it based on both films that have been made. The first movie Willy Wonka and The Chocolate Factory that hit movie theatres in 1971 has been a long childhood movie that I grew up with. I always wondered if it was real and if there would ever be a chance that there would really be golden tickets found in a piece of candy. When the second version of the movie came out titled Charlie and The Chocolate Factory in 2006, I was mesmerized once again on the whole golden ticket fantasy and excited to see how the cast of players have evolved to make the film more modernized. I think it is a great way to choose an artifact that has had a legacy with men, women and children all over the world and for many years. I think it is a positive example of what popular culture really is.

I find your definition of popular culture interesting especially the fact the it can initiate change. I feel that pop culture is every changing and it can be accepted or not and that is when your own beliefs and upbringing comes into play.
I think that yout artifact being Charlie and the Chocolate Factory is great. I remember loving the older movie as a child. But I regretfully say that I have never viewed the 2006 version.
Charlie & the Chocolate Factory is a great example! This is an artifact that spans generations especially after it was remade. I loved the first version as a child, and I thought the remake was amazing (especially Johnny Depp as Willy Wonka). I found it very interesting to see a more modern take on what has been a classic book and movie.
I liked the artifact that you picked, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. I loved the first one as a child and I enjoyed the second one as an adult. It fits perfectly in the popular culture assignment we have been given.
I, like the others here, have always loved Charlie and the Chocolate factory. Not just the movies, but I also read the book when I was a child. This story has captured the imagination of so many who have watched and read it. I think that it's interesting how so many felt that the 2006 version didn't live up to the original, but I think that both have their merits.
Errenne,
I agree with your definition of Pop Culture as well as your attitude in understanding how pop culture is relevant in our daily lives. I think that understanding what is relevant in all aspects of our lives, including popular culture, is very important. I think your artifact is terrific because of the contact this movie had on more than one generation.
I like how you worded your defenition of popular culture, it was a very interesting point of view. I also liked how you broke the two words down to gave an explanation for each word. I also like your artifact it is a very good one, considering they did recently remake it.
I can see I'm not alone in appreciating Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory...It was the first movie I can remember actually sitting still for all the way through! I'm right there with krisa, I haven't seen the remake yet either. I always worry the remake is going to take away from the original.
